Calabria produces many excellent local red wines, often served chilled and very drinkable! The area is not short of facilities. All local towns have their usual selection of restaurants, bars, banks, shops, supermarkets, medical centres and general services.
For cultural education, seek out a one-of-a-kind festival in Calabria. If you are travelling through Calabria in mid-August, stop in Tropea to honour its famous red onion and in nearby Pizzo Calabro to judge whether its tartufo (an especially tasty ice cream) is really the best in southern Italy, as reputed.
Along with the wondrous sights, smells, and tastes, be sure to spend time with the people of Calabria. Although conquered and re-conquered by Greeks, Romans, Saracens, and others for centuries, the Calabrese have remained kind and generous; don't be surprised if you are invited into a cantina for homemade wine as you wander about a small village.
These properties in Italy remain relatively undiscovered and are subsequently low cost properties which are rich in exotic culture.
