Crete

The outstanding island of Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. Rocky coasts, vast sandy beaches and pebble shores border this beautiful island. Crete is a different world compared to other parts of Greece as it offers its own character and traditions.

Crete has a flourishing economy that is mainly driven through tourism. Unemployment is low on Crete, and a large proportion of its labour force is employed in the services sector, notably in occupations related to tourism.

Crete offers you the chance to taste the world-known Cretan diet based mostly on pure olive oil. In many neighbouring villages you can see locals enjoying coffee under the shade of old trees, taste the sweetness of Cretan wine and watch traditional dances.

The capital city of Crete is Herakleion which is a modern town with places of interest both in its centre and surrounding area. Herakleion is one of the most densley populated places in Crete and has a highly developed transport and road system.

The climate of Crete is quite varied due to the large altitudinal range on the island. Lowland areas are typically Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. Most of the rain falls during winter - especially in the mountains which are prone to localised thunderstorms and strong winds.
